When Only A Vintage Floor Lamp Will Do Reviews
The word vintage is used to describe something from another era. It is similar to the word antique. So in looking for a vintage floor lamp, you could say you were looking for an antique floor lamp, however according to one online source, vintage usually refers to something between 30 and 80 years old.
Where do you find vintage floor lamps? Unless you want something very old or very rare, they can be found in several different places. Antique stores, flea markets, garage sales, want ads, and in online sites such as eBay, Amazon, and Craig’s list and other ebusinesses
. If you truly want an antique, you need to be aware of replicas; modern pieces made to look like older ones. If you were restoring an old home, replicas are a good way to blend the old with the new, as the new lamps will be equipped to handle modern electrical systems. However, from what I have been able to discover, replacing archaic wiring with a modern equivalent is a relatively simple task, so choosing between an original or replica may be simply a matter of choice, availability or financial considerations.
As for the true antique, the style of the lamp may be dependent on the time period in which it was made, what materials were available, and its purpose. To learn about them one need look no farther than the internet, where you can find information quickly, but I’ve often discovered the best way to learn about such things, is to visit an antique shop and find that person who has made it their passion. However, for our purposes, we can stick to the internet.
The search engine produced hundreds of possibilities, mostly for sites selling vintage pieces or replicas, but with a little digging you can find some solid information. One article praised the older lamps, especially those made in the early 20th century as being of much better quality then modern ones because they were made of much more sturdy material such as brass or wrought iron. He mentions that one lamp designed in they the 1920’s is still in use today, and is still the brightest light available. The writer of the article makes no distinction between the words vintage and antique and uses the words interchangeably.
If you already have a lamp and just need a new shade or other replacement part, there are several online sources available including the one owned by the writer of the article mentioned in the last paragraph.
The lamps come in a side range of styles from torchiere, bridge arm, swing arm, and curved arm. They may have one light or several. Lamp shade styles are as varied as the lamps
Vintage floor lamps can add a charming finishing touch to any room, in addition to providing an excellent light source. Fortunately, largely due to the quality of workmanship of design and durability of materials used in bygone days, there are still many wonderful pieces in existence today. So vintage is the way to go.
